What is UK City of Culture?
UK City of Culture is a competition run by the UK Government every four years. The winning city, or area, then hosts cultural events through culture-led regeneration for one year. Coventry was awarded the title in 2021 but the bidding process for the 2025 title is currently underway.
The 2025 bid has seen more places than ever apply to be the next UK City of Culture. This may be because for the first time groups of towns have been able to join together and apply for the title to be awarded to their local area. Consequently, Medway aspires to take up the baton from Coventry, which followed Hull in 2017 and Derry-Londonderry in 2013.
Any day now, the 20 bidders will be reduced to an initial longlist and will be awarded grants of £40,000 for the first time to support the next stage of their applications. A final shortlist of bidders is set for early 2022 and the winner will be announced by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) in May 2022.
Why Back Medway?
We are proud to be a business ambassador for Medway’s City of Culture bid and are committed to establishing the area as a great place to live, work, learn and visit.
This bid encompasses the towns, villages, and peninsula that makeup Medway as well as the river which links them. Our offices are based in this area and many of our staff live here too, so we would welcome the opportunity to put Medway on the map and host a cultural programme that represents the diversity and creativity we have to offer.
At 1PS we believe in boosting opportunities and supporting business growth, and we provide finance and technology to facilitate this. We are delighted to take this belief further, by backing this bid, which could provide a major growth opportunity for businesses in Medway and Kent area.
How to Contribute?
The bid is currently being shaped by people across Medway’s towns, villages and peninsula
