‘Tis the season, so inspired by Charles Dicken’s very seasonal masterpiece: A Christmas Carol we are going to get comfortable, grab a mince pie and use our expertise to tell you about the past, present, and future of recruitment and technology.

For those who aren’t familiar, or have trouble recalling, the original Dickensian plot is based on an aging miser called Ebenezer Scrooge who is haunted by the ghosts of his former business partners. To teach mean Scrooge a lesson these ghosts send the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to visit. After the paranormal encounters, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.



In our adaptation, the ephemeral Ghost of Christmas Past may cover the joys and authenticity of days before mobile phones, computers, and the internet. The days when jobs would have had to be advertised through word of mouth, or even a town crier! Before online databases and emails, when obtaining a CV would have had to have been done via post or fax.

Going even further back, beyond files and filing cabinets, Ancient Romans would have had to consult wax tablets for candidate details.

Just the thought of the laborious and time-consuming work past recruiters would have faced, with the limited technology available, makes you wish you’d seen a ghost!



The vibrant Spirit of Christmas Present will offer a glittering view of digital transformation. The wonderful technological solutions that supported agencies in these challenging times, through transitions to and from remote and hybrid work environments.

With all the uncertainty, this year’s growth may have been slower than previous years, but the industry still grew. Making a recruitment agency in the present not a bad place to be.

Although perhaps we could all do with a good dose of Christmas cheer after the disruptive effects of Brexit, the pandemic, and the resulting talent shortage.



With the last chime of the clock, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will allude to a future of recruitment and technology.

A world where technological developments and AI will increase the efficiency and productivity of the recruitment sector. Long gone are the days of meeting every candidate face-to-face, with most interviews conducted via video, using apps. Social media will play a big role with increasing numbers of candidates using their mobiles and (the other kind of) tablets for job seeking.

Yet alongside this beautiful technological vision of the future, it is important not to forget about humanity. Like Ebenezer Scrooge, we must learn that it pays to show some heart. Achieving this balance between high tech and humanity is the Christmas wish of the future.
